Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) began in the 1980s to examine the opportunities presented by ports in China. Following extensive feasibility studies and consultations with the local and national authorities in mainland China, in the early 1990s the first development took shape.
 
1992
The first investment was made, with an agreement to develop the port of Jiuzhou. It was followed by a second agreement in November for Nanhai Port.
   
1993
Jiuzhou Port became the first port to begin operations.
   
1994
In April, the first stage of phase one of Nanhai Port came on stream. Agreements were signed for two more ports at Gaolan and Shantou. HDP was formally established, to hold and manage all its existing and future river-coastal ports and related facilities in China. Gaolan Port became operational in November.
   
1995
An agreement to develop Jiangmen Port in June was followed by its opening in August.
   
1996
December saw an agreement signed for Xiamen Port.
   
1997
Xiamen Port and Shantou Port went into operation.
   
2001
Berth 4 of Xiamen Port went into operation and an agreement to develop Berth 1 was signed.
   
2005
Gaolan Port commenced the construction of Phase II in April.
   
2006
An agreement was signed by Hutchison Ports China in March to operate Huizhou Port.
   
2007
An agreement was signed by Hutchison Ports China in February to develop Phase II of Huizhou Port. In May, Berth 1 of Xiamen Port became operational.
